MARIA APARICIO PUENTES: POINTS OF ORIGIN
Maria Aparicio Puentes artwork hits me in the gut, and isn’t that the best kind? From my understanding, her process involves finding black and white photos she connects with, seeing an immediate relationship with shapes and space that compliments her hand embroidered layers. There’s a filmic quality to the images that she selects that really creates a narrative. What adds more to that is the tactile, xerox copy texture of the photos combined with the beautifully delicate webbing of her embroidery. Her color palette is bold and exciting, popping off the images and creating what to me translates as a triple decker, chocolate covered ice cream sundae with a hot pink cherry on top effect. What do you think?
