The Red Balloon is a beautiful French film from 1956. It has a gorgeous color palette that is muted at first, then pops with the bold colors of the balloons. I wanted to capture the beauty of the film by keeping the poster design simple, and focusing on the power of the image.
I played with hand lettering to compliment the 1950s French style of the film. I wanted it to be playful, yet simple, in comparison to the strong image.
Engineer prints are inherently grainy, which worked with the design as it complimented the 1960s grain of the film stock. I layered several stills from the film then really worked on creating seamless transitions to create the composition.
