How To, by Julie Morstad, is a whimsical journey into the activities of children. It is told in simple, one lined phrases, and accompanied by beautifully illustrated images, using delicate and loose line work. Her use of patterns kills me, check out the ikat in the illustration below! Her color palettes are soft and playful, touching on nostalgic. I feel like I’m cheating on my children whenever I pull one of her stories out, as I feel just as inspired, as they do entertained, by her tales. Even my littlest guy will sit and take in the pictures for much longer than he is usually prone to, which speaks great lengths to her ability of capturing the hearts, and minds, of her young audience. Add this book to your kid’s (or your own) collection and I promise that you will re-visit it like you do your favorite art book!
