Sometimes the challenge of living in a city is finding a means to satisfy that human urge to go outdoors and breath. I don’t mean just going to a park, but going to the “great” outdoors, without having to drive 2+ hours. I want trees, and rustling leaves, and birds chirping, and very little car noise (shocking request in L.A.). Enter Trails Café in Griffith Park, at the base of the hiking trails (hence the name). This little haven, right off of Franklin, is an inviting mountain setting oasis, literally 5 minutes off the beaten path. The Café has everything from piping hot coffee, to apple pie, to no-frills grilled cheese, done just right. Outside of the café you have the option of a ring of haystacks to let the kids run on, tree stumps for climbing, or a shelf of old school games to be played in the shade of a nearby pine. If you’re alone, grab a book and some coffee and curl up on a bench for a couple of hours, the noise level really drops here. Trails offers just the kind of soul-recharging setting I find necessary to visit every couple of weeks. Goodbye city, hello outdoors!
