It was William Faulkner who penned the phrase “kill all your darlings”. For him, it was in reference to avoiding the pitfalls of writing too preciously and getting distracted by frivolous wording. I think the same can be applied to design, and it is a tenet I remind myself of on a daily basis...hence, making the reminder banner above that hangs in my office. Staying true to the bigger picture and not getting bogged down in the minutia of all the pieces, frivolous or otherwise, is a constant practice.
